To Margret: I Hope This Post Will Find A Way To You

Since I was a primary school child, I was told in the school and TV that southerners are our enemy, they want to control our country and if we let them to do so, they will confiscate our houses and treat us as their slaves. They will destroy our mosques and burn Quran. We told that they are already doing this in the areas controlled by SPLA. We were forced to chant for Jihad, pay our share of feeding the soldiers and pray for our brothers to be safe and win "our" battle of Islam. 

I remember one of my class mates (Margret) was crying someday; she was terrified by war slogans and felt threatened by them. That day I questioned myself why the sweet Margret was terrified? We were chanting for the bad southerners not her, I told her she will be OK but somehow I felt guilty of letting her feel as such. Surprisingly I realized later all southerners felt like Margret.

The 9 years old girls started talking; why Margret was attending the school with us while all Southerners were attending Comboni school attached to the Evangelical Church? she will be fine there and will be easily integrated ignoring the fact that she is Sudanese and has the right to attend any public school.

Dear Margret;

please accept our deep sorrows and apologies for hate we spread; you know we liked you very much. We were just school kids and didn't mean to hurt you. Now I can imagine the pain you felt while the girls asked you to leave the school. The fear you lived in when we chant for Jihad and the killing of Southerners. If you voted to South Sudan separation no body can blame you. If you choose not to leave your home in Algazeera, you should have the choice, and for you Sudan revolts.

مساء السبت 16 يونيو 2012 انطلقت الاحتجاجات والهتافات من داخلية البركس للبنات واغلبية قاطناتها من طالبات جامعة الخرطوم في تظاهرة هادرة تندد بالغلاء، قمعت قوات الشرطة التظاهرة واقتحمت داخلية البنات مما أدى لإصابة عدد منهن.


كانت هذه التظاهرة شرارة انطلاق لعدد من التظاهرات ابتداء من صبيحة اليوم التالي ؛ الاحد 17 يونيو 2012 وتم اقتحام الداخلية مرة اخرى ذاك المساء بواسطة قوات الشرطة والامن.


واليوم الاثنين 18 يونيو 2012 وفي هذه اللحظة تحديداً تحاصر قوات الشرطة داخلية طالبات جامعة السودان (البركل) ويتم قذفهن بالقنابل المسيلة للدموع.


هذا في اشارة بسيطة يا سعادة البرلمانية بما تفعله الطالبات القادمات من الاقاليم ، اللائي لا يجد ما يسد الرمق وحكومتك وحزبك الاسلامي لا يملك سوى تضييق العيش عليهن وتلطيخ سمعتهن وقذفهن بمثل هذه الاحاديث ، نحن نعلم ما يفعلنه ، لقد قطنت هذه الداخليات منذ 8 سنوات مضت ، وقتها لم يكن العيش مضنياً هكذا ، ولكن اغلب زميلات السكن كن من أسر بسيطة ، تقتطع من قوتها اليومي لتبعث بحفنة من النقود لبناتها المتغربات وان كانت لا تكفي، أعرف بعض الزميلات كن يتناولن وجبة واحدة فقط يومياً ، أغلبهن عانين من سوء التغذية ونقصان الوزن طوال فترة دراستهن الجامعية ، وقد كن قبلاً صحيحات الجسد ولكن غلاء المعيشة في الخرطوم ما أدى الى ذلك ، فضلاً عن ذلك في احد الفصول الدراسية أصيب الجميع بشتى امراض الجهاز الهضمي من قرحة معوية وقرحة اثنى عشر لما عانينه من جوع أو التايفويد والديدان لرداءة الطعام المتوفر. 


أحيطك علماً يا سعاد ، ان كنتي لا تعلمين ، فهؤلاء الفتيات الهزيلات البنية ، الجائعات ، كن الاكثر حرصاً علي الدراسة والاجتهاد واحراز أعلى الدرجات ، وكن الاكثر استقامة خلقاً واخلاقاً. وقد صعقت يوماً عندما سألتني احدى النساء عن مدى صحة ما يحدث في الداخليات ، وان فتيات الارياف يحملن سفاحاً وينجبن وهذا مالم أشهده قط ولكن لا أكف عن سماعه من أفواهكم كما أوردت في حديثك البرلماني أو أقرأه في صحفكم الصفراء التي تقتات من الشائعات والمصائب الاخلاقية. ولكن ما أجده مثيراً في مخاطبتك أعلاه للبرلمان هو اعترافك بأن مهنة الشاي عمل الحرائر ، وانطلاقاً من هذا الاعتراف فانا أناشدك بأن تقودي حملة ضد ما تمارسه المحليات ودوريات النظام العام من ظلم وانتهاك لبائعات الشاي ، تارة للجباية وتارة لإساءتهن وقذفهن بالسوء.


هؤلاء الفتيات كن من جيلي ، عندما لم نكن نتظاهر لاسقاط النظام فحينها كنا نراه بعيداً ، وعندما لم نتظاهر ضد الغلاء حيث لم يكن قد وصل ذروته بعد ووقتها كنتم تتمتعون ببترول الجنوب ، لكننا تظاهرنا من أجل ابسط حقوقنا كالعيش الكريم الذي لطالما حاول صندوق نهب الطلاب ومنسوبيكم حرماننا منه ، حيث يتم تكديس الفتيات في الغرف وتحوي الغرفة من 8- 10 افراد بل ووصلت بكم الجرأة الي تسكين15 طالبة من كلية المختبرات الطبية في غرفة واحدة في الوقت الذي تحتل فيه بعض الفتيات من منسوبيكم غرفة كاملة منفردة بها ولا نعلم لأي كلية أو جامعة كن ينتمين ، وقاتلنا من أجل توفير الخدمات الاساسية من مياه وصرف صحي في الداخليات ، وكانت الاحتجاجات تخرج عفوية بلا تنظيم تنخرط فيها كل الفتيات باختلاف انتماءاتهن.


واليوم أن طالبات الجامعات ، القرويات ، الفقيرات ، الحرائر ، الشريفات ، اخترن أن يسلكن طريقاً اخر ، غير الذي ترينه وتعتقدينه ، فبدلاً عن ما تظنينه لقد اخترن المقاومة والصمود في وجه مليشيات الشرطة وعصابات الامن المسلحة ، لا يملكن سوى الهتافات والتفافهن حول قضية هي بالاساس قضية شعب بأكمله ، شعب يرهن  بقاءه بزوالكم ، وانتم حتماً زائلون. 

يا سعاد ... الما لقت تبيع شاي بتطلع مظاهرة ... عشان اختها الصغيرة او بتها ما تجي تلقاك لسة قاعدة في البرلمان وبتشوهي في سمعتها

Nubian Survivors... Telling Their Stories

I've lost two post graduate scholarships because of my ethnicity, The officer asked me to proof that I'm Kenyan by showing my parents birth and marriage certificates which is impossible for a person born in 1940's; the officer himself who was my school mate doesn't have his parents' birth and marriage certificates, luckily he is not a Kenyan Nubian" Said Nubian Elder from Kenya

I ran all over the way crossing boarders to Kenya, left my mother and my family behind escaping from the war in Northern Uganda. We settled in Kakuma Refugee Camp where I met my mother and my family was a life. We didn't eat for many days and finding food was hindered by the local community who were surrounding the camp and checking us like aliens" Said Ugandan Nubian Elder.

Nubian are ethnic group living in South Kordofan region and the far North of Sudan, some of them were taken to Kenya by the British colonization and settled there. Nubian are found also in Northern Uganda and some part of DRC. They conserve their culture, they share the same status of subordination across the region of East Africa

Regarding the status of Nubian Sudanese  nationals; nothing to say more than all the audience of the event were refugees who flee from Sudan a year ago with the escalation of violence in their home land; Nuba Mountains.

On June 2011 the war broke between Sudanese Arm Forces (SAF) and Sudan Peoples Liberation Army/ North Sector (SPLA/NS) triggered by bombing the house of SPLA leader and state governor candidate  Alhilo. On May 2012 Human Rights Watch reported finding a cluster bomb (its usage is banned internationally) in the war zone.  HRW Report

During the past 12 months uncountable number of Nubian were, murdered, injured and displaced. The authorities does not open IDP camps around Khartoum and other cities, so most of the survivors have to live with their relatives and former neighbors who were lucky enough to flee the region and resettle in other cities like Khartoum. Nubian activists have been targeted by the authorities; Jalila Khamis Kuku was kidnapped from her house in her night clothes and detained since March 14th, 2012 till now without facing any charges.

One more shared characteristic between the Nubian across the borders is their strength and the ability to survive and tell their stories.

Much appreciation to KACE Sudan, Kampala Office for spotting light on the culture and status of Nubian in the region. Diaries of Ethiopian Lady in Khartoum

This post is a reflection of real stories I've witnessed happening to Ethiopian ladies in Khartoum, the capital of Shariaa and civilization project.

The 1st scene, on May 7th 2012:

A whole family was arrested even the children in Adiem near Bashdar station. 

It was the afternoon and the police raided the house where we sell food and they knew about us, but they come from time to time to confiscating our utensils. Tomorrow we  will be judge immediately after accusing us of managing prostitution place. They know we are not prostitutes, we are just selling food. we left our families behind and promised to send a lot of money monthly.Our money is not enough to pay the fine, live and send some money back Now we should find alternatives for selling food. Anyhow we are harassed several  times a day in the streets, by our costumers and police men, having no choice rather than living with abuses, so may prostitution would be a choice.

Womens' Hell is Sudan under NCP rule

In this post I'm just trying to understand how Sudanese people feel about whats' happening to women in Sudan.


Since NCP has came into power by military coup in 1989, Sudanese women in public spheres started to suffer from the suspicious ideology of "Civilization Project" which aim basically to reform the "default" Sudanese identity.

Public order law campaigns since early 1990's are targeting women activists, students, street venders and each woman dare to challenge fake Islamic morals by moving outside home and raising her voice. Even-though during 2000's women human rights violations became more intense. Women living in Sudan, are living in hell.

Very brief list of violations:

• Nadia Sapon, tea lady passed away when she tried to escape Alkashaa (Chasing by public order police).
• Lubna Ahmed Hussien, journalist accused of wearing indecent clothes because of wearing trousers.
• Sylvia, christian teenager harassed by police men and flogged immediately after accused of wearing indecent clothes.
• Video lady, a video on youtube showing brutal flogging of a woman caught by public order police and how they are joking about her begging for mercy
• Safia Ishag, artist and activist raped by NISS officials because she participated in mass demonstrations.
• Awadiya Agabna, a house wife shot to death in front of her house by public order police.
• Naglaa Sid Ahmed, photographer and video blogger NISS has confiscated her camera; laptop and other stuff. They are harassing her most of the time.
• Izdihar Gumaa, member of SPLM/ North sector detained arbitrarily several times during this year.
• Galila Khamis, member of SPLM/ North sector was kidnapped from her house after midnight in her night clothes, she remain in custody till now without facing any charges.
• Recently Intisar, a minor accused by adultery and will face stoning to death punishment.

Those are few stories of women; some of them have survived and unfortunately part of them passed away. Our reactions as humans are limited to the time of the incident but we tend to forget about it quickly. The day after Awadiya Agbna's murder I talked to a friend saying that NCP would never survive after this brutal killing. We can not keep silent anymore but we did. For me those violations never came out of my mind. I always regard the suffer of any woman as a personal suffrage. I feel somehow responsible to relief them and free myself from feeling threatened or being guilty when taking no action.

Why I chose to be an activist rather than a pharmacist?

Sometimes I hear that a person (possibly me) chose to defend human rights because he or she is running for publicity, opposing Islam and Shariaa or willing to be rich as the west is donating huge money for opposing Islam.

Personally I've always believed in human rights and realized how Islam is a religion of justice and equality, despite all the nonsense interpretations which mainly arise with the issues of dealing with women, sexual identities and religious minorities.

I was young employed woman in a patriarchal society. I decided to have two jobs; an officer in a governmental institution during the day time and a community pharmacist in evening shifts. This was the start of a long journey of sexual harassment, assaults, stress and depression in Shariaa oriented society, and I'm sure that I'm not the only woman who gone through this, but it is the general condition for working women.

I was recruited in office with more than 20 employees, only 4 of them were females (two with permanent jobs, a part timer and I have to do the civil service there)

I was challenged by the new situation as I used to put makeup daily, my colleagues were staring on me and checking me like an alien.This was not the college any more!!! nail polish and lipstick were used only for seduction, If you used them then you are looking for a man.Someday an older female employee advised me not to put makeup and wear Hijab or I would never get promoted. Another female employee used to tell me that (X and Y) our colleagues are asking you not to show them your hair and I was completely surprised by this interventions and how those people could dare to think that I'm targeting them by unveiled hair.


Whenever I attend a meeting, or talk to a male colleague the issue of marriage is a major part of any conversation, why a young educated lady working in a place full of men is still single? this question was usually asked for curiosity, or a silly introduction of proposing to me. I've never felt much humiliated as a male colleague who is taking the task of finding me a spouse.


These stories were happening during the day time, you will feel more surprised by the evening tales ranging from harassment to police cases and death threats.Those stories need ages to be told.

How can I take care of a patient when I feel disrespect; although I have to do so? when he can't see that I'm a professional pharmacist rather than a girl working alone in a night shift. When the situation is turning from giving advice to being insulted and harassed.


To be honest not being a pharmacist is not just related to experiencing violence, but also has a relation with the power relations between the pharmacist, the physicians and the patients. Those relations are governed by the customs and traditions rather than policies and regulations (apparently they do not exist). You find your self after years of studying pharmaceutics and pharmacology, do experiments for long hours, sometimes for many days; have to forget about everything and just trying to read damn prescription which is full of awful mistakes and handle the medicines to the annoying patient.

Tea ladies, doctors, activists all of them are experiencing harassment and violence in other forms but also at different levels, when you are poor the discrimination is doubled.

Women need protection from systematic violence not medicines. 

I realized that while serving rural communities in Gazira and Kassala states as a part of medical students health convoys. I met married young girls, circumcised girls, and women who never talked about their health problems. I saw the sadness, hopelessness in their eyes and was not able to help them. Those women were very poor and have no other options than marriage and mostly living with violence.

Briefly this is my story. If I tried to add more details I think I will write a memoir of 26 years.

أماكن للرجال فقط

في طريق أسلكه يومياً ، أمر بمجمع "مشيرب/ الديار القطرية" تحت التشييد ، واجد نفسي انظر الي الملصقات الاعلانية على طول سور المشروع ، وقد لاحظت قبل مدة ليست بالقريبة وفور عرض هذه الملصقات ، انها تعكس حياة لم أراها قبلاً في السودان ، من ناحية شكل المباني والموديلز ومحاولة محاكتهم لحياة الرفاهية ،


واعلانات كهذه ؛ تحاول ان ترسم صورة لحياة نجد فيها صوراً لنساء وفتيات كأمهات ، زوجات وطفلات كجزء من العائلة ، وأكثر ما يزعجني في هذه الاعلانات ، تنميط صورة النساء حيث يكن غاية في الجمال والاناقة ولكن ضمن اطار "المنزل" فلم أصادف موديل في اعلان تحاكي صورة امرأة عاملة ولم أر موديل رجل يحاكي حياة أب او زوج ، عموماً هذه ليست دهشتي الكبرى من هذا الاعلان.


بعد أيام قلائل ، لاحظت أن صور جميع النساء والفتيات في هذا الاعلان قد تم اخفاءها باللون الاسود ، رغم ارتدائهن للحجاب ، في اوضاع عادية جداًحسب تقديري يمكن ان نراها في الشارع العام ، الحدائق ، التلفزيون القومي ،...

ظاهرة اخفاء صور النساء في الاعلانات بالاسبراي الاسود ليست جديدة ، وقد لاحظتها مسبقاً في اعلانات ام تي ان ، التي استهدفت صور المغنيات نجمات برنامج أغاني وأغاني الذي يذاع يومياً في رمضان وعلي مدى سنوات سابقة.


أي عقل مريض هذا الذي يجعل صاحبه مشغولاً بتتبع وجوه النساء في الاعلانات ، وترى كيف يتعامل هذا العقل مع حقيقة ان النساء (لهن وجوه حقيقية واجساد حية) هن بشر يأكلن الطعام ويمشين في الاسواق.


ما أثار استغرابي اليوم تحديداً عند تدقيقي على دعاية "مشيرب" مجدداً هو الغياب التام لأي مظهر نسائي عن الاعلان ، واظن ان ذلك وسيلة لضمان استمرارية الاعلان دون تشويهه ، فما ذنب الشركة أن تتكبد كل هذه الخسائر في اعلانات مشوهة ، بالمقابل فقد اوحى لي الملصق بأن هذا المكان مخصص للرجال فقط ، وبعدها اجتررت عدداً من الذكريات لمواقف قد تتعرض لها أي فتاة او امرأة تتجرأ بمغادرة عتبة بيتها في هذا السودان.


احد هذه المواقف حدثت اثناء رحلة سفرية لإحدى الولايات ، وفي طريق العودة الي الخرطوم توقف البص عند كافتيريا ليرتاح المسافرون والمسافرات قليلاً ، وقد قررت حينها وصديقة لي دخول هذه الكفتيريا لتناول بعض الشاي ، وكان المشهد كالاتي:


مكان مكتظ بالرجال "كالعادة في اماكن الاكل والشراب" و ست شاي ، وفور دخولنا الكافتيريا اتجهت انظار جميع الحضور نحونا ، بعضها ابدت استغراباً ، بعضها غضباً (ارجح ان هذه الفئة من مؤيدي الاسبراي الاسود) والبعض الاخر ابدى فضولاً لا متناهي ، ما كان غريباً أيضاً عدم وجود أي امرأة من المسافرات داخل الكافتيريا ، وأكاد اتفهم ذلك ؛ اذ ان الجميع (واشدد على كلمة الجميع ) في هذا المكان يظن ان الطعام مخصص للرجال فقط والنساء لا يجب أن يأكلن ، وان رغبت احداهن بذلك فعليها ان تستجدي عطف أحد المسافرين ليجلب لها شيئاً.


أكاد اتفهم تلك النظرات فقد شكل دخول امرأة للكفتيريا تحدياً سافراً لإستجداء العطف ، ومهدداً "للحنك في البص" وانتهاكاً لسلطة الرجال في هذه الاماكن.

أعلن دفع الله حسب الرسول البشير، النائب البرلماني وعضو لجنة العلاقات الخارجية بالمجلس الوطني واستاذ التربية بجامعة افريقيا العالمية مواصلته في الامر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر بالسودان،وجدد التزامه بمنع دخول اية فنانة الي البلاد لاقامة حفلات ساهرة راقصة وسفر اية فنانة للغناء باسم السودان في المحافل الدولية، مبينا ان البلد في حالة حرب وتعبئة واستنفار،وقال في حوار من داخل قبة المجلس الوطني ينشر يوم غد الجمعة ان الفنانة شيرين عبد الوهاب لن تغني بأرض السودان حتي لو كان عائد الحفلات المادي تستفيد منه قري دارفور او اطفال السرطان لان الله طيب لا يقبل الا طيبا و لايقبل حتى حج وتلبية المسلم الذي يحج بأموال غير مشروعة ،ونفي دفع الله ما صرحت به شيرين لوسائل الاعلام العربية عن تأجيل حفلها باستاد الخرطوم الي وقت اخر لاسباب امنية، وقال ان شيرين تم منعها رسميا بإجماع رئيس واعضاء البرلمان ووالي الخرطوم، مبينا ان وصولها للخرطوم كان سيؤثر سلبا في معنويات الجيش السوداني الذي يقاتل الاعداء في هجليج مشيرا الي محاسبة كل مسؤول ساهم في تسهيل اجراءاتت دخولها للبلاد عقب الفراغ من الحرب، موضحا ان المغني زرياب كان سببا في سقوط الاندلس وكوكب الشرق ام كلثوم كانت سببا في هزيمة المصريين امام اليهود، ودعا قناة النيل الازرق الي ايقاف بث برنامج اغاني واغاني في رمضان. وناشد دفع الله حسب الرسول، الشركات الكبري بسحب صور النساء من الشوارع الرئيسة والاعلان للسلع والبضائع المختلفة بطريقة اسلامية ونصح الشباب بضرورة اكمال نصف الدين والتعدد في الزيجات التي تخرجهم من الفقر الي الغني، وشدد على ضرورة ايقاف الورش والندوات التي تنادي بختان الاناث، متهما الامم المتحدة بتمرير قانون سيداو بالقطاعي ومحاولة مساواة المرأة والرجل في الميراث، وقال في سؤال حول مدي تطرفه وانتمائه الحزبي والطائفي انه مسلم يأخذ من ايجابيات السلفية وانصار السنة والصوفية والحركة الاسلامية والمؤتمر الوطني .
