Happy Birthday Sudanese Dream :)

The Way to World Pulse is My Journey Through Belief in Change

Published here

My journey to World Pulse has started the day I traveled to Maatoug; a village in Algazeera state with dozens of volunteers with medical and health studies backgrounds as a part of health promotion campaigns. I was 19 years old and studying my 2nd year at faculty of pharmacy. In Maatoug I've met girls in my age and even younger. I was shocked to know that they were mothers and some of them were divorced. I felt deeply sorry for them; a girl at the age of 19 should not be a mother and a wife; they should be thinking about attending university and getting graduated. I noticed that girls at the age of 12-13 years old are chatting about marriage and skin bleaching. They thought that to get a man; they have to get fairer skin and be pretty. I've realized that; while I'm feeling grieved because my family doesn't accept my activism; there are a lot of young women cannot make major decisions about their lives and how it should be. I've continued joining health promotion campaigns and keeping an eye on the status of women across Sudan.

By 2006 I've produced my wall journal "Antidote" anonymously and focusing on major sociopolitical incidents and commenting on stories about women rights like the news about a female obstetrician leading a campaign against passing an act banning FGM.

On 2011 while chatting to my boyfriend I told him that I need to write and share my opinions as I've not written anything since my graduation in 2008. His eyes sparked and told me about "blogs" and how the Egyptian activists used them for a political cause and introduced me to Lina Bin Mihanni's Blog. Immediately he sent me an online book on "Social media for advocacy". Few weeks ago he sent me an email about "Voices of Our Future 2013"

Till Dec 2011 I was not that much into blogging; but I thought "why not?" When I've spoken to a young activist and a friend about the status of displaced women around Khartoum and how intelligence officers are not making their lives easier by restricting the voluntary and civil society work. He immediately said "Why don't you start blogging and tell the world about that"

Since that time I'm blogging to inform & to inspire. I'm blogging about women I've met. I told my personal experience about sexual harassment in the streets of Khartoum. I've joined global campaigns for peace in Sudan and women rights in Africa. My stories about sexual harassment have leaded my readers to brainstorm on putting strategies of protection from harassment. I've received questions about the status refugees in Sudan, how they could be helped.

My journey to World Pulse is my journey to discover that every single voice matter. All you need is motivation which is your story, inspiration to speak out which is the impact of your words and belief that you can create better world which is the achievements reflected in World Pulse.

IWD 2013: Fighting for Peace & Justice is the Future of Young African Women

Published here

People of Africa are suffering from civil wars, poverty and underdevelopment. Women have the biggest share of suffering simply because of their gender. Rape has been used as war weapon in DRC, Darfur, Somalia and Libya as well as to terrify peaceful protestors in Sudan & Egypt recently.

Two years after the Egyptian revolution; the revolutionist women are facing gang rape and sexual harassment in protests. According to Radio Sawa an Islamist Sheikh legitimized rape of the protestors saying that they deserve it as long as they've joined the protests. This is proof that sexual violence is an organized crime against the Egyptian activists who peacefully came out to claim their rights.

In 2011, Safia Ishag, was kidnapped and gang raped by security service officers in Sudan. They have brutally punished her for enjoying her constitutional right of being politically active, as well as threatening all the female activists by facing the same fate if they could dare to oppose the ruling regime and join a peaceful protest.

Women have been objects of war. Traders, food and tea sellers have been targeted by governments and rebels militias for serving their opponents. In Nov 2012, Arry Organization reported that 33 women have been arrested and accused for spying for the benefit of the Sudan People Liberation Army – North Sector (SPLA-NS) in Kadugli; the capital of South Kordofan state. No charges have been set against them yet. Hurriyat, an online newspaper reported that Khadiga Badr - one of the detainees - was admitted to Khartoum hospital on February 2013. Alledgedly for having a severe back injury and fractures as a result of torture by security officers. On Dec 2012 Fardous Ibrahim, a tea lady, was burned with boiling water when she refused to talk to a soldier from the central reserve forces in Um Dukhum, Darfur, according to Radio Dabanga

The same is happening in Somalia, where according to SIHA Network report to the 52nd session of the African Commission on Human and People's Rights , Maryam Samow was pulled from a vehicle and beheaded by Alshabab for serving tea to AMISOM member.

Enforcing certain morals and traditions implies discriminatory acts against women, in Khartoum 2008 more than 43,000 women were accused for violating no 152 of the criminal code by wearing indecent clothes (Human Rights Watch News). The indecency is not identified and will depend on the police officer who is the complaint and the witness. Many survivors testified that they were harassed and asked to pay bribes in order to send them free. On March 5th, 2012 Awadiya Agabna was shot to death in her front door while defending her brother against police officer who accused him of being drunk, insulting and beating him and trying to arrest him. Her killer, the police officer is still moving freely without a trial.

Few weeks after Awadiya's murder; I've witnessed tens of young ladies chased by 3-4 men in Nairobi downtown. The taxi drivers and the passersby were watching helpless and some of them were laughing. After a while I have discovered that those men were the officers of the city council and the girls were unlicensed sex workers. One of the girls was caught by the officers and taken under the threat of sticks. Later I had a conversation with a Kenyan activist who testified that some of the city council officers are confiscating money regularly from the poor unlicensed sex workers. Bribes, confiscation of belongings and harassment should be regarded as immoral acts rather than indecent wear or unlicensed female sex worker.

It's worth noting that 43,000 cases of indecent wear were reported by public order police; while rape crimes are allowed to be mediated. A lawyer and activist prefers to stay anonymous testified the under reporting of rape crimes is reasoned to the article of the criminal code, if the rape survivor failed to proof rape by bringing 4 witnesses to the court she will be accused of committing adultery and faces 100 lashes or stoning to death as a punishment. The other reason of under reporting of rape is the fact that judges prefer mediation of rape cases; if the rapist offered to marry his victim and conceal the scandal.

I see our future as young African women fighting against discrimination, injustice and violence, committing to be in the side of the disadvantaged and mobilize the privileged to join the struggle for freedom, peace & equality. I'm seeing our power to change the world.

Obsession of Sudanese with Ethiopian Ladies Goes Beyond The Day to Day Harassments

Beside day to day harassment; they search for their stories and photos, and then stigmatize them for spreading sins & immorality in the society. Search engines traffic source to this blog reveals that 7/10 of search keywords during the last month are related to Ethiopian ladies and sex; taking into consideration that the majority of the blog audience are from Sudan.

Blog stats one week after sharing this post.

The Extended Hands Of A Dictator

Published here
Haroun Adam and Abdullahi Mahmoud Hiabo are two Eritrean journalists based in Khartoum and working for Adoulis Media Centre were arrested by the Sudanese National Intelligence & Security Service (NISS) on Monday 24th Dec, 2012. Their whereabouts still remain unknown.

A close source to the detainees says the reason behind their arrest is organizing a workshop for Eritrean youth in Khartoum on behalf of Red Sea Research Centre and in coordination with the Sudanese Academy for Administrative Sciences. The workshop theme was Crisis Management. The source says that the Eritrean Embassy in Khartoum seems has made a complaint to the Sudanese authorities for allowing organization of activities without the permission of the embassy and regarded that a facilitation of activities for the Eritrean opposition groups in Sudan.

Abdullahi's family has submitted a visit request to the NISS information desk.  They were told the visit is not allowed before spending at least 15 days in detention, they will be informed by the date and time of the visit. Meanwhile nobody knows their place and detention conditions. UNHCR office in Khartoum has been informed by their detention.

On October 2011 another Eritrean journalist, Mr. Jamal Himad was detained for 3 months by NISS in Khartoum. There were fears of handing him over to the Eritrean authorities which is detaining journalists for years without a trial.

In an article written by Abdullahi in 2010 (Press here to read the article in Arabic) he quoted the words of Ali Abdu, Eritrean Minister of Information and the government spokesperson saying they don't want to be trapped in what so called free media, they have their own ways of dealing with issues. He added also there is nothing called opponents there are hired mercenaries' clients. Surprisingly H.E Mr. Ali Abdu has disappeared last month during an official trip to Europe and there is unconfirmed news saying he is seeking asylum.

Eritrea and Sudan seems to be an identical twins in oppressing their people and having the most isolated presidents in the world. While Albashir can travel to few selected places, Aforgi has chosen to isolate his country from the international community by not attending the UN general assembly for 10 years (2001- 2011) and missing no occasion to criticize and insult the institution. On 24th May 2012; Eritrea's national day, Albashir was the one and only president joining the celebrations in Asmara.

Both of the dictators are sharing oppression of their people, isolation from the international community and bringing their countries down as well as cooperating and doing each other favors like detaining Abdullahi & Haroun by the Sudanese authorities on behalf of their fellow Eritreans, without any respect to the international law and under the glare of UNHCR.
